Advice for parents

How to prepare your child for their first day of school?

Published Updated 5 min readBy Jules Verne teaching team

The first day of school is an emotional milestone for the child and the parents alike. A few habits, started in advance, make the transition far smoother.

Re-establish a regular rhythm

One or two weeks before school starts, gradually bring bedtime and wake-up time back into line. A rested child adapts more easily to a new environment.

Use positive words about school

Talk about school as a place to meet friends, play and learn. Avoid turning it into a source of worry or a threat.

Give concrete reference points

Show the route and the building, and pack the school bag together. Explain how a day unfolds: arrival, class, break, lunch, going home.

The big day

Plan an unhurried departure. A short, confident goodbye reassures more than one that drags on.

After the first few days

Listen without over-interpreting. Tiredness and a few tears are normal in the first week. If in doubt, talk to the teacher.
