Advice for parents

How to nurture a love of reading?

Published Updated 4 min readBy Jules Verne teaching team

A child reads mostly when they want to. That desire is built through shared enjoyment, not obligation.

Read with, not just read to

Stopping on a picture, asking what will happen, rereading the favourite part: reading becomes a shared moment, not a lesson.

Let them choose the books

Comics, a book about dinosaurs, a magazine: the format matters little if the child chooses. Enjoyment first; the “right book” comes later.

Set up a reading corner

A basket of books within reach, a small lamp, a cushion: a place of one’s own to read makes children want to come back.

The example adults set

Children read mostly if they see reading around them. An adult putting down their phone to open a book says more than any advice.
